Do I need a dehumidifier?

After living in our home for just over two years we decided to invest in a dehumidifier to remove extra moisture in our basement. For the past two years we used products like Damprid to remove moisture in our basement. Damprid worked great in our apartment but unfortunately in a home basement you definitely need a product with a bit more oomph. We couldn’t justify continuing to pay for the Damprid product since it does involve a recurring expense (time, money, moisture absorbers). It was time for something that we could use year-round and not have to worry about refilling the container. It was time for a dehumidifier.  According to Natural Handy Man:

If you store anything of value in your basement, or if you use your basement as living space, it is important to keep the moisture level low. Unlike the rest of your home, the parts of your foundation that are below ground level, or grade, is constantly in contact with moisture from the earth outside. Though some homes have adequate vapor and water barriers installed outside their foundations, many older homes have none.

This moisture can cause mildew growth and damage to furniture of all types, photos, carpets, and virtually anything except the dog. It is a sad fact that every year people unknowingly destroy their valuable possessions by not taking steps to lower the level of moisture in their basement’s air.

We’ve decided that any appliance we purchase should qualify or be rated as an Energy Star appliance. After some research for humidifiers on Amazon, we decided to buy the LG Electronics 45 Pint Dehumidifier. After a few hours of running the dehumidifier in our basement, we’re quite thrilled. You can definitely feel a difference in the room and has already filled up half the drain bucket.

Another wise purchase for the home.
